Corruption in Congress: Which Legislators in Congress are Corrupt?
Government corruption, specifically corruption in congress, is a major contributor to America's economic problems.
Listed below are the current Senators and Representatives investigated thus far for corruption. Over 65% exhibit "ethically challenged" behaviors.
Citizens go to jail for eliciting and taking bribes, for lying under oath, and for failure to pay taxes.
Shouldn't representatives in government should be held to an equal or higher standard of ethics?
Unfortunately, many politicians in Washington are corrupt and self-serving and exempt themselves from "common people" laws.
Since corruption in congress affects voting records, honest and trustworthy behavior in elected officials is imperative to America's success.
Who is "Ethically Challenged" and who is Trustworthy?
If your Representatives are missing, check back - Additions at least weekly (Progress 437/536).
Typically only one breach of trust will be listed; but any politician with one foray into government corruption probably has many.
Senate Corruption in Congress, Ethics Violations, or Abuse of Public Trust
| Senator | |
| AK - Murkowski | Abuse of Power, Use of Seat for Personal Gain: According to AlaskaReport, Murkowski purchased Kenai River-Front property at a discount of around 40% from a Real Estate Developer and AK political donor, then failed to report the ($120,000) gift. Interestingly, according to TPMmuckracker, Murkowski earmarked $6 million in taxpayer money for a federally funded road along the river to the property. The earmarks amount to a $120,000 gift from taxpayers across America to each of the 50 property owners along that road (including Murkowski herself). Murkowski sold the property back to the developer when media exposed her machinations. According to Citizens for Ethics, the loan terms were also suspect. She landed an 80%, 39yr loan (not the sort of loan ever available to general public for undeveloped property) through a bank with family ties on the Board of Directors. |
| AL - Shelby | Payback history: According to Bloomberg report Shelby earmarked $50million of taxpayer funds over 10yrs for COLSA, a company owned by Francisco J Collazo who donated $400,000 to Shelby. According to the Seattle Times, Colsa was certainly not the only example of this behavior. Shelby earmarked $1.6 Million taxpayer dollars for both Sikorsky and Scientific Research Corp in 2008 after receiving $4000 in donations from each. Neither company is even in Alabama. |
| AZ - McCain | No Corruption or Ethics Violations Found. Two accusations have proven to be without merit: McCain wrote a letter encouraging the FCC to do it's job and make a decision one way or another regarding a media company purchase. Some accused McCain of corruption for writing the letter since the media company was a campaign donor. Since McCain did not use his position to influence legislation, funnel money or influence a decision, there was no corruption and accusations were agenda based for the 2008 election. McCain had been similarly accused in the famous "Keating Five" scandal, a very similar case where McCain also did not intervene legislatively or pressure for favorable treatment of a campaign donor. The motivation for his inclusion in that accusation was later exposed to be attributed to Howell Heflin (D - AL) who didn't want only Democrats under fire for the scandal even though only Democrats were involved. |
| AR - Lincoln | Paybacks: The Seattle Times reports $1.6 Million in 2008 taxpayer financed earmarks by Lincoln for $7500 campaign contributor Exoxemis. |

After the contract award, Feinstein honored her promise and introduced legislation to give FDIC $25Billion of taxpayer money. |
| CT - Dodd (Ret) | Use of Seat for Personal Gain: Accepted special loan treatment amounting to over $75,000 by Countrywide plus $21,000 in donations. Dodd legislation then protected Countrywide's risky lending practices and provided the company Bailout money. Also, according to The Wall Street Journal, received an estimated gift of at least $500,000 in the form of 2/3 stake in Irish Cottage. | Bartlett - 6 | Paybacks, Misuse of Campaign funds: According to the 2008 Seattle Times Favor Factory Report, Roscoe Bartlett has a prolific history of funneling taxpayer money to companies that donate to his campaign funds. He granted $9.4 Million to DRS after receipt of $12,500 and $1 Million to Alliant Techsystems after receipt of $7500. Although, there were more examples, these two stood out because the companies were not in his district or even in his state. Campaign fund abuse included donation of $1000 from his PAC to is son's campaign. FlipCongress' policy is to overlook instances of Congressmen who pay their children out of campaign donations (on the generous assumption that the children are providing campaign services equal to the value of the money transfers). However, Bartlett's outrageous $91,403 payment to his daughter in the 2006 election cycle was impossible to ignore. Several years after speaking and lobbying against hazardous waste injection wells on multiple occasions, Conyers changed his tune. Why? His wife received a $10,000 cut from money Environmental Geo-Technologies company owner gave her aide. The company was trying to get permits through the EPA for hazardous waste injection wells. | Bachmann - 6 | No Corruption Found. There are multiple blogs that accuse Bachmann of various ethics violations. The complaints center around Bachman's proclivity to advocate for her political position and discuss current issues and legislation in public. One non-blogger example found involved CREW. The organization filed an ethics complaint over Bachmann's use of her congressional website to encourage opponents of the HealthCare Bill to come to Washington and voice their opinions. While this may be against Congressional rules, this activity does not pass the test for corruption (bribery, tax evasion, paybacks, exploitation of position for monetary gain, etc) on FlipCongress2010. |
| Ellison - 5 | Attempted tax evasion: Ellison accepted and failed to disclose the value of a $13,350 personal vacation trip provided to him by a taxpayer subsidized Islamic school (Tarek ibn Ziyad Academy) to Mecca. | Baird - 3 | Paybacks: The Seattle Times reports payback schemes to Guardian Marine International involving Baird, Dicks and Murray. $17.65 Million was earmarked for boats that the Coast Guard and Navy did not want and could not use. Why? Baird recieved a hefty $14,277 from Guardian Marine while Dicks and Murray were similarly rewarded. The insidious problem with earmarks for equipment like this which cannot be used is that, due to budget rules, approved Pentagon funds must be diverted from needed projects to cover the earmarks for things such as these useless boats. Baird does not limit his payback earmarking to completely unusable projects however.
